Ember is a free Chrome extension for people who fast. Set a goal, and the popup shows how long you have fasted, which phase your body is in, and an honest estimate of the fat you are burning. One quiet check-in an hour. Nothing leaves your browser.
Drag the needle, or use the arrow keys. The gold pin is your goal.
The window here is the extension's own code, with the dial above feeding it instead of the clock. Click the flame in your toolbar and this is what you get.
Fasting for and the phase your body is most likely in, from digesting to running mostly on fat.
Goal bar for the window you chose, from 12 hours to 72. It turns green when you get there.
Burning now and fat this fast, in grams and kilocalories, updated every second.
The curve of your fat-burn rate since you started, and one line of encouragement that changes as the fast goes on.
End fast and Edit profile are real buttons here too. Try them.
Your fasting fat-burn coach
Numbers are rough estimates from a simple model.
All math runs locally. Nothing leaves your browser.
For general wellness only — not medical advice. Check with a doctor before fasting if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have diabetes or another health condition, take medication, or have a history of eating disorders.
A silent Chrome notification lands on each whole hour of your fast. Before the goal it encourages. At the goal it tells you to eat. Past 48 hours it stops quoting fat numbers and starts asking how you feel. These are the extension's actual messages.
Ember does not measure anything. It estimates, and it says so inside the popup. Here is the whole model, so you can decide what the numbers are worth.
fat burned per hour = resting burn ÷ 24 × share from fatResting burn is your Mifflin–St Jeor basal metabolic rate from sex, age, height and weight. Fat tissue is counted at 7.7 kcal per gram.
share from fat climbs from 30 % to 90 %Piecewise linear between these points, flat after 48 hours. It is an illustrative curve, not a measurement of you.
What this ignores: activity, sleep, what you ate before, hydration, and everything that makes you you. Treat the gram counts as a direction, not a scale reading. Ember is for general wellness, not medical advice.
Your profile, 0 to 72 hours. The marker follows the dial.
Ember has no server, no account and no analytics. The extension never makes a network request. Your profile and your fast live in Chrome's local extension storage on your machine, and go away when you remove the extension.
storageRemembers your profile, when the fast started and your goal, so the popup can pick up where it left off.
alarmsWakes the extension once an hour, on the hour, to write the check-in. No background polling.
notificationsShows the hourly check-in as a silent Chrome notification. Nothing else is ever shown.
